Herbalism, Imposter Syndrome & Plant Connection | Sam Roberts & Renée Camila

In this episode of The Herbalist Hour, I sit down with herbalists Sam Roberts and Renée Camila from Now and Then Herb School.

We explore what it really means to trust yourself as an herbalist, especially in a world where imposter syndrome runs deep.

Sam and Renée share how building intimate relationships with plants can shift your confidence, your practice, and your understanding of what it means to “know” something.

We also talk about their origin story as collaborators and educators, the philosophy behind Now and Then Herb School, and how they approach teaching herbalism through connection, experience, and community.

From low-dose “spirit medicine” to working with mystery herbs, this conversation covers a wide range of topics while staying grounded in one core idea: relationship.

If you’ve ever doubted yourself on your plant path, this one’s for you.

The Life & Times of Mason Hutchison with Special Host Rosalee de la Forêt

In this special episode of The Herbalist Hour, Rosalee de la Forêt turns the tables on HerbRally founder and longtime host Mason Hutchison for a wide-ranging, heartfelt conversation about rebuilding, community, and the person behind the podcast.

What starts as a “comeback episode” becomes something deeper: a reflection on major life transitions, self-care, friendship, fatherhood, herbal practice, and the many passions that make Mason who he is.

Along the way, Rosalee guides the conversation while surprise video questions and messages from fellow herbalists appear throughout the episode.

Mason shares stories about nourishing herbal infusions, movement, movies, basketball, ping pong, and meaningful plant relationships — along with reflections on the herbal community that has shaped his life and work.

A big thank you to the many herbalists and friends who took the time to record surprise video questions and messages for this episode. Your kind words and support truly meant a lot. I didn't cry at all.

HerbRally has always been about connecting plant people, and this moment was a beautiful reminder of just how generous and supportive this community can be.

Ep. 50 Replay | Celebrating the Life of John Gallagher

In this very special replay of The Herbalist Hour Episode 50, I sit down with John Gallagher — co-founder of LearningHerbs and a beloved member of the herbal community who recently passed away after a long struggle with depression, anxiety, and insomnia.

This episode means the world to me. If you’ve followed HerbRally for a while, you’ve probably heard me talk about how much John influenced my herbal journey. His podcast, HerbMentor Radio, was my introduction to the wider herbal world. I devoured every episode — over and over again. Through those interviews, I felt like I knew the herbalists he featured. And John was the thread running through it all — full of curiosity, warmth, humor, and a contagious laugh.

Eventually I became an HerbMentor member (still am to this day), and a few years later, John actually became a friend.

I’ll never forget him visiting the Mountain Rose Herbs marketing department when I worked there — he brought so much joyful energy with him. And at RootStalk, the legendary one-time herbal gathering, I feel like our friendship really took root.

It was also there that I learned John wasn’t quite as squeaky clean off-mic as he was on his show — turns out he loved to swear, just like me! That only made me love him more.

Over the years, I got to know him better through shared time at events, visits to his home in Port Townsend, chats on the phone, and eventually, this very conversation on The Herbalist Hour. Recording this episode felt like a full-circle moment. I finally got to sit down and interview someone who helped shape my path in herbalism — not just as a mentor from afar, but as a real friend.

Everyone I know who knew John adored him. He lit up every room. And he gave so much to this community.

My heart goes out to Kimberly, their children, his family, and everyone who loved him.

John — I love you, buddy. Thank you for being there during some rough times. Thank you for your support of HerbRally. And thank you for helping open up the herbal world to me, and to so many others.

You’ll be deeply missed.

~Mason

In this episode of The Herbalist Hour I'm joined once again by Dana Hutchinson.

Dana was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune condition called Lichen Sclerosus in 2012 shortly after learning her mother was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

With Western harsh topical steroids and estrogen creams making things worse and covering up underlying systemic issues, Dana looked to eastern medicine to begin repairing her condition, and within 3 months, she began to feel vital, hopeful, and motivated that recovery was possible.

In one year, Dana’s extreme case of LS was in full remission. Now supporting LS clients for over a decade with comprehensive herbal medicine protocols, Dana has produced a potent herbal oil clinically tested and formulated to target the debilitating symptoms of LS.

We chat about what Lichen Sclerosus is, why she thinks LS is being diagnosed at an alarming rate, how she assesses it at the Wildflower Clinic, lifestyle recommendations for those with autoimmunity, resources for those with LS and a whole lot more.

This was in incredibly informative interview and I hope you get a lot out of it.

We traveled to NOLA, my favorite city, for my 40th birthday and had the opportunity to interview three incredible herbalists.

Justine was one of 'em and we met up at the herb shop to record this interview.

We chat about affordability in herbal medicine, non-capitalistic approaches, Maypop's disaster relief services, community building, Justine's 10 year journey at the shop and a whole lot more.

There are also a couple of special guest questions from my good friends and Herbalist Hour alum, Rosalee de la Forêt and Nick Moya.

JUSTINE'S BIO
Justine Diamond works behind the scenes at Maypop performing administrative and managerial duties. She has been in relationship with plants since she was a child and began studying herbalism informally when she joined the Maypop team in 2016.

She completed the Reclaim Program at Samara School of Community Herbalism in 2019 and continues to learn and grow in her practice.

Justine also creates natural perfumes through her business, Elspeth’s Airs, which can be found in the shop. She is a certified aromatherapist and is available for consultations and custom products. Justine loves being in the world of plants and especially appreciates Maypop’s commitment to community and accessible medicine.

Thanks for tuning in and we'll see you in the next episode,

~Mason

We traveled to New Orleans, my favorite city, for my 40th birthday and had the opportunity to interview three incredible herbalists.

Lucretia was one of 'em and we met up at our AirBnB to record this episode.

With a journey that began when she was just a little girl mixing herbs, clays, and muds on her grandparents’ farm, Lucretia has had a lifelong connection to plants. She’s been in the wellness industry for over 25 years, working as a holistic esthetician and educator. Lucretia has worked and trained with many internationally known spa and skin care companies. Her quest for knowledge and interest in the traditional approach to wellness has led her to training extensively in Southeast Asia, Thailand, and Bali. Lucretia focuses on integrating indigenous healing rituals, plant spirit medicine, holistic approaches to food/herbal medicine, ancestor reverence, and meditation into modern daily practice.

Welcome back to The Herbalist Hour!

Today, we’ve got something special for you — what we’re calling the lost episode with Nathan Wright.

This was recorded last year, but due to an absolutely whirlwind year for Nathan, the video never made it to you — until now. Originally, Nathan had planned to release a different cold water experience video at the same time as this one, but that one remains unreleased and is now something he uses exclusively for his classes.

Then, somewhere along the way, he misplaced this recording. And by the time he found it again last year, he was deep in organizing the Northwoods Nature Fest, an incredible event that this year will be held May 30th to June 1st in Wolverine, Michigan.

This festival has drawn in some amazing herbalists, including jim mcdonald and Matthew Wood, the latter of whom has called it “the greatest little under-marketed herb festival in the North Country.”

Nathan teaches a wide range of classes, including: Indigenous herbalism Mushroom foraging Cold water immersion (which you’ll actually see him demonstrate in this video), wild rice cultivation Permaculture Treaty rights, bark teas and plant medicine, pain relief methods, Ojibwe storytelling, guided plant walks, and even discussions on Troubled Water, the documentary he’s featured in.

*BONUS: Nathan is sharing with us a special coupon code for 15% off all items on his site.*

Exclusive to listeners of the HerbRally podcast go to HerbalLodge.com and use code HR15.

Enjoy the LOST episode of The Herbalist Hour with the one and only Nathan Wright.

Talk to you soon,

~Mason
