Herbs, Humans and Holobionts with David Hoffmann | 54

The new technologies, collectively known as ‘omics’, are showing that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. We will explore the profound connectivity and mutual support revealed by this new science. It is a good time to be holistic – the evidence is in.

Today’s episode is brought to you by the NorthWest Herb Symposium.

Green Beauty: The Why and How of a Clean Beauty Routine with Caitlin Frazier | 53

Today’s episode is with Caitlin Frazier, an herbalist, wellness adventurer and blogger based in Nashville, TN. She blogs over at The Locusts and Honey. For all of the links and references that she mentions be sure to check out her post under the same title

Visit Caitlin on the socials:

Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and it is estimated that every day the average woman puts over 515 chemicals on it. I think that’s an understatement. The European Union has banned of 1300 chemicals from cosmetics, while the United States has only banned 11. This means that there are 1289 chemicals in the majority of our personal care products that have been deemed unsafe for all of the inhabitants of Europe. There are virtually no regulations on cosmetics, nor does every single ingredient need to be identified. The word “fragrance” on an ingredients list should send you running. It can mean ANYTHING…there’s no way to tell what that implies.

Usnea Monograph by Kiva Rose Bell-Hardin | 52

When the rains arrive in the Gila, the whole landscape deepens in color and space. It’s as if the land, plants and all, takes a deep breath and fills itself out. Mushrooms pop up out of the forest floor, Morning Glory vines spiral upward and the annual Sages burst from seed to flower in the span of only a few weeks. The trees themselves seem to swell and darken with the moisture, and the lichens that live on them often quadruple in size before fruiting wide open. The Usnea is especially beautiful to watch, the delicate and usually dry threads expanding into soft, flexible tendrils that dangle from every Pine and many Junipers.
— Kiva Rose

Blue Vervain Monograph with Geraldine Lavin | 50

On today's episode Geraldine Lavin teaches us all about the blue vervain.

She wrote an excellent monograph on this invaluable plant ally, which you can find HERE

It is generally agreed upon in the herbal community that Blue Vervain is the herb for uptight, fanatical, type A personalities. Many herbs have specific organ affinities, whereas blue vervain seems to have more of specific mental state. Thomas Easley says blue vervain is for “tight-necked, over-achieving, list-makers, who can’t ask for help.” Matthew Wood adds that Blue Vervain is for “people who make lists…of other peoples faults.” He also notes that Blue Vervain people tend to be “strong above, weak below” meaning that they can be strong in words, weak in action - very intense and judgmental of others, often holding themselves and those close to them to almost unattainable standards.

An Evening with Ryan Drum: Transgenerational Herbalism and Epigenomics | 49

This recording is from the  NorthWest Herb Symposium. Jay and Bridget Johnson of Tree Farm Communications host this excellent event each August in Coupeville, WA. Their next event is August 23rd - 26th, 2018.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
Epigenomics is the study of epigenetic changes in gene expression that occur without commensurate changes in DNA base pair sequences; these changes may be transmissible to subsequent generations. Recent research in the emerging field of Epigenomics strongly supports the probabilities of therapeutic transgenerational herbalism. Epigenomics is developing in response to research showing very convincingly that many cancers are initiated and controlled by transmissible extrachromosomal mechanisms.

Ryan Drum, PhD has a BSc in Chemical Technology and a PhD in Botany (Phycology) from Iowa State University. While a NATO Scholar, he did postdoctoral studies on Cell Biology using the Electron Microscope and Microcine at the Universities of Bonn, Germany and Leeds, England.

For 10 years he taught Botany and related subjects at Universities (UMASS/Amherst, UCLA, WWU).

He studied Herbal Medicine with Ella Birzneck, founder of Dominion Herbal College in British Columbia for 12 years, and taught at their summer seminars for 35 years. He has been an adjunct faculty at Bastyr University since 1984, and he lectures at major herbal conferences and herbal schools.

Dr. Drum is the author of over 30 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, the author of Electron Microscopy of Diatom Cells 1966, Springer Verlag, a 100-Plate Atlas, in print for 20 years, and a contributing author of two chapters in Planting the Future (Gladstar and Hirsch 2001) and a chapter in Fundamentals of Naturopathic Endocrinology, M. Friedman 2005.

The proud father of three wonderful children and two fantastic grandchildren, he lives in a rustic little hilltop cabin he built over 40 years ago on a remote island, off the grid, without indoor plumbing or refrigeration.

Ryan believes in true patient autonomy: the freedom and right to choose one's caregivers independent of their official certification.

Listen in as herbalist and musician Johanna Warren discusses her upcoming "Plant Medicine Tour".

On this “Plant Medicine Tour,” we are honoring the bountiful medicine that grows generously from the Earth, and the humans who are cultivating and protecting it. In every city we visit, we are inviting local herbalists, farmers and activists to be present at our concerts to share about their work and how their communities can get involved. Essential Ayurveda for Women with Adena Rose | 44

Today's episode is with Ayurvedic practitioner Adena Rose.

She goes in depth on three tools that you can use to help promote your health and well-being.

This class was originally a webinar that she hosted. A huge thanks to Adena Rose for sharing this with all of us!

For more from Adena Rose: AdenaRoseAyurveda.com

If you’re not feeling your best, most-likely, you need Prana.  And each of these tools infuses the cells with Prana for the deepest nourishment.

These tools have saved my life.  I have been told by other women the same.  We have all been at the bottom of our barrel, no more to give, anxious, and barely making it through the day.  And maybe you’re there right at this moment.  Over-taxed, over-giving, giving every last drop of yourself for your family, your career, just to get by.
— Adena Rose

Adena Rose Bright is an Ayurvedic Practitioner and Panchakarma therapist, professionally trained in The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®.

I take the most practical, useful tools from these authentic sources and guide women in applying them to their lives through experiential courses and women’s gatherings.  I want to explore a new model of health. To help women get out of survival mode and experience healing and wholeness using food, herbs and breath as medicine.  Ayurveda, yoga, and Maya medicine have given me these tools.  I am an action taker – and feel my place is in the role of teacher.
